Iso-drones for Hazardous Environments

Combat Level: Auxiliary

Where: The Chryseis Shard, p.68

Iso drones are auxiliary options in the army lits of several different factions, primarily because of their use on worlds with hostile environments. They were first introduced in The Chryseis Shard to protect the forces involved in the ‘Quest for Origin’ scenario based on the highly dangerous, radioactive world of Chryseis 1.

Isolator or Isoshields are a kind of forcefield bubble that is selectively permeable to the atmosphere, temperature and nanosphere where present. Large, static devices can create isolation zones encompassing entire buildings. Smaller, mobile machines have a correspondingly smaller field size. Iso drones are general purpose drones fitted with mobile isoshield generators.

Isodrones are heavily protected by kinetic armour as well as substantial nanocored casing. The isoshield creates immense gravitational resistance that makes it impossible for the drone to move very quickly. As a result, the isodrone is a sluggish machine that moves only slowly, ideal for protecting exposed troopers.

Iso-drones are general purpose drones fitted with mobile isoshield generators. Those in service with the Concord C3 are based on C3D1 General Purpose drones, whilst other variations are found based on all manner of similarly sized drones. They are commonly used on worlds with intolerable atmospheres to provide safe refuge for survey and exploration teams. Many factions use the Concord pattern drone, including the Algoryn and Boromties, whereas the Isorian pattern drone can also be found amongst Freeborn forces.

On the Table

Iso drones are slow, but are scramble proof and are equipped with Iso-shield generators. The generators protect models within 5″ of an iso-drone, including the iso-drones itself.  The shield protects against the various penalties and restrictions as specified in the hazardous environments rules (see The Chryseis Shard, ‘Hazardous Environments chapter, p.76) or as indicated in the special rules for individual scenarios.

A unit that is protected by an iso-shield is considered to be scramble proof in the same way as the drone itself. This can be of considerable use outside any hostil environment, though the Slow nature of the iso drone can hamper its effectiveness as an offensive support drone (then, it’s a piece of kit whose purpose is primarily defensive!).
