Light & Medium Weapon Drones

A C3D1 and C3D2 drone with Interceptors

Given their machine-oriented culture, it is hardly surprised that both the Concord Combined Command and the Isorian Senatex make greate use of drones on the battlefield, from the heavier seige drones to combat drones and down to lighter, weapon drones. The Freeborn, of course, make use of what they can buy and manufacture for themselves, typically using the less-complex Concord designs, but just as happy to take de-sharded Isorian equipment.

The weapon drones come in three broad types: Light, Medium and General Purpose. We discuss both Concord and isorian designs here as they are very similar in approach – hardly surprising given the common origin of the two major factions!

The D1, D2, Andhak and Nhamak weapon drones perform a vital function in their respective armies: a resilient, mobile weapons platform. Most often deployed singly, with shield, spotter and batter drones, they have long ranges and typically strike right across the table – especially with the plasma weaponry. Whilst the plasma light support (PLS) variants do not always take spotter drones, having a reasonable rate of fire (RF3) and good Accuracy (6), the heavy weapon drones with the plasma cannon almost always take spotters to give them a better chance of hitting their target.

The D1/Nhamak’s PLS is a favoured weapon option due to its general-purpose usefulness against light combat drones, vehicles, infantry and Ghar. Such a weapon rarely has much success against Ghar or the heavier vehicles, however, and this is where the C3D2 and Andhak drones come in with their heavier armament. A solid tactic is to bed the drones down in cover fronted by a batter shield, forcing the enemy to cross open ground (none of these drones are any good in hand-to-hand) whilst the drone itself enjoys greater protection – in the case of the D2/Andhak drones, frequently making them Heavily Armoured and so resistant to pins.

The GP drone has a different role entirely. Whilst its batter shield can be used, like the others, to cover the advance of accompanying troops – and it is useful for this alone – it can be equipped with a subverter matrix,  a device that oozes combat nanophages to destroy and take over the enemy’s combat shard. On the table this is modelled by forcing opposing drones and vehicles to make Command tests, with failure putting their dice to one side to be contested at the end of the turn. Whilst not effective against Ghar, the efficacy of such a device means the GP drone is often the subject of aheavy fire from opponents!

The C3D2 and Isorian Andhak can be armed with plasma light support, compression cannon or fractal cannon – all light support weapons, making it a useful, all-round weapons platform in both forces. All the weapon drones can be given a spotter, synchroniser, batter and shield drones and the D1 and Nhamak units can be given extra weapon drones, if need be. All the weapon drones can be given Self-Repair in case of problems.  The Freeborn Adventurers (Mercenaries) can take a C3D1 type drone as an auxiliary option in addition to the General Purpose Drone. Both Concord and Freeborn can take the general Purpsoe Drone as an auxiliary option (typically taken with a subverter matrix).

The Isorian Difference

The primary differences between the Concord drones and the Isorian drones are that the Senatex sometimes equips their drones with phaseshift shields, allowing them to phase out (go Down) in return for better protection (a reroll of a single Res test). One other major difference is that the Isorian Andhak medium drone can also be equipped with a phase-shift projector. Such a weapon is intended for breaching purposes, any solid target becoming temporarily unsynchronised from normal space and synchronised with phase armour. This allows nearby phase troopers to run through the phased-out wall.

The C3D1 is a core model on the C3 Strike Squad plastic sprue but can be bought separately. There are several different versions of the D2 drone.
