Where To Start: Xilos Horizon or Kar’A Nine?

We run through the two introductory boxes, Strike on Kar’A Nine and The Xilos Horizon, to help you decide which is best for your needs.  We’ve three sections:

Strike On Kar’A Nine introductory set

Strike on Kar'A NineStrike on Kar’A Nine is the introductory set for Beyond the Gates of Antares for anyone who’s never played a wargame, or for those who play other games such as Warhammer 40,000 and who may be intrigued by an alternative system by the original designer, Mr Rick Priestley.

The full colour Start Here book is designed to coach you through the rules, making each step as exciting and as simple as possible. The full rules are explained with a series of scenarios that gradually introduce the mechanics of the game. Each scenario introduces you to further rules, allowing you to absorb the basics, culminating in a final battle using everything in the box where you will be able to use all you have learnt.

The mini-rulebook has all the basic rules and this, coupled with the Start Here book, gives you everything you need to play the Kar’A Nine. The mini-rulebook is A5 in size but is identical to the first part of the main rulebook so is a really useful and handy reference book to carry around or to share when you get the full rulebook; however, it’s worth saying that does not contain rules for vehicles, special weapons and equipment and does not contain the background detail (some of which is in Start Here).  Given the PDF lists are available here and on the Warlord store, it will take you a long way!

Strike on Kar’A Nine contains:

  • 1 64 page A5 full colour rulebook
  • 1 44 page Getting Started Book
  • 6 Order dice (3 Maroon & 3 Olive Green)
  • 1 pin marker frame

The Xilos Horizon starter set

Where the new introductory Strike On Kar’A Nine is about helping those new to the hobby or curious about the world (and fascinating rules) of Antares dip their toe in for a look, its larger brother – Beyond the Gates of Antares: The Xilos Horizon – is a full starter set that allows gamers to fully immerse themselves within the complete background of Antares.

Xilos Horizon ContentsThe game is rich in detail and extremely ambitious in scope. Thanks to the order dice draw system, every battle is a tense affair with both players constantly being involved in the action. The full size full colour rulebook is extensive in it’s depth of detail and the plastic miniatures offer something wholy new for Sci Fi gaming.

Inside Xilos Horizon, you’ll find far more than in the Kar’A Nine and background and rules for the core weapns, equipment and armies of the PanHuman Concord, the Ghar Empire, the Isorian Senatex, the Algoryn Prosperate, the Freeborn Vardos, and the Boromite Guilds.

Beyond the Gates of Antares game play utilises the successful and exciting dice activation system first pioneered in Warlord’s popular and award-winning Bolt Action WW2 wargame – ensuring that both sides remain active and engaged throughout every game. There is no down-time – action is fierce, fast, constant, and unforgiving. Resolution is by ten-sided dice offering considerable expansion and great range of detail compared to traditional six-sided dice.

The rest of the starter set contents allow 2 players to get to grips with the Pan Human Concord or the Ghar Empire, with a very iconic and high Sci-Fi look that’ll capture your mates’ attention when they roll onto a battlefield.

Growing the Rules

The three rulesets can be looked on as a continuum for players new to the game. Any of the rulessets can be used as a starting point as the earlier ones are subsets of the full rules – and not everyone plays with the full rules, anyway!

Stages 1-6: The Kar’A Nine scenarios book is a staged intro to the game, taking a novice from knowing nothing to be able to play a decent game using much of the main rules. It has six scenarios, each of which teaches more of the rules as you play along and is suitable for anyone, even those completely new to wargaming.  The mini-rulebook supplied in Kar’A Nine is a direct extact of the core rules from the main book without army lists, background, and some equipment/vehicle details. Otherwise it’s identical to the main book on those pages. It’s great as a handy reference.

Stage 7: A subset, introductory set of rules which slots between the Kar’A Nine scenario book and the main rulebooks is the Base One ruleset. This has all the rules from Kar’A Nine and implements many of the rules from the core rulebook, but leaaves out some of the details and intricacies of the full rulebook.

Stage 8: The core rulebook provided in the Xilos Horizon set. It’s probably good to think of the lower stages having subsets of these upper stage rules. Not everyone uses all the rules and, for any two armies in use at any one time, not all the detail is required.  Thee is a great deal of background in the core rules, too!
